Troubleshooting the Paper Machine

Many mills run with operating problems which can, should, and, in many cases, must be corrected. Omni Continental consultants have the skill and experience to both accurately diagnose problems and provide the action steps necessary to resolve them. Troubleshooting is a large part of our company activity. We are often hired by mills to provide innovative solutions to both short-term and long-term problems. Part of our formula for success rests on the fact that our consultants not only possess the necessary theoretical knowledge, but also have had the practical experience of working at the mill production level. This combination has, since 1974, served as a basis for Omni troubleshooting achievements worldwide. Our close cooperation with mill staff when working towards solutions to mill problems is another reason for our troubleshooting success. This tenet ensures that problems are correctly identified and that their resolutions are long-lasting.


Training in the Pulp & Paper Industry

Omni Continental offers training services at all levels of the Pulp and Paper Industry. We run our courses both on-site at client mills and publicly.


We also offer specialty courses and seminars by grade from tissue and fine paper to multiply, linerboard, coated board grades. Our courses feature lecturers with mill production backgrounds, and focus on real mill troubleshooting and operating expenses. The classes are small (30 people) and focus on the individual registrant's concerns.


Recommendations for Rebuilds, New Systems or Equipment Purchases

We are frequently asked by our clients to recommend or to give advice on machine rebuilds, or the installation of new systems or equipment. For example, a mill may plan to purchase or rebuild a new headbox but be unsure as to what type of performance guarantees should be provided.


Another example is a grade conversation for an existing machine. The mill may want an outside expert to review equipment modifications and design specifications to ensure an optimum rebuild. With over 50 years of industry experience, we supply unbiased, sound technical and practical advice regarding concerns such as these.


Design & Layout of New Pulp & Paper Machines

Omni Continental is active in the area of system design and installation with paper mills around the world.


We assist mills in formulating calls for proposals and evaluating builders' proposals for capital projects; and assess the recommendations of builders' proposals and suggest changes and alterations to eliminate any process deficiency and help ensure an optimum start-up curve; and oversee the work of major engineering companies examining the underlying the underlying assumptions on which their designs are based. This work usually is done on behalf of the mill involved but is occasionally done on behalf of the engineering company involved in such projects.


Improvement of Machine Operation Through Technical Audits and Lost Time Analysis

Paper machine efficiency is the most important operating parameter, yet in many mills the average efficiency is far below the industry standard. Omni Continental, through Lost Time Analysis and Technical Audits, has helped raise the efficiency of many client mills, resulting in direct and in many cases, dramatic financial benefits to the clients.

Years of experience are required to set up and use a Lost Time Analysis (LTA) system effectively. Omni consultants bring this level of experience to each assignment they handle. It is this same level of experience that allows Omni consultants to optimize a mill's existing LTA system and help raise and sustain machine efficiencies in a relatively short period of time.


The concept and methodology of Omni's Technical Audits were originally developed by Dr. Jasper Mardon. Essentially, the Technical Audit is a mill self-improvement program. An in-house mill team, working under the guidance of an experienced consultant and using the methodology and paper machine analysis program (PMAP) developed by Dr. Jasper Mardon, is set up with the specific task of improving mill efficiency.


Conventional operating audits by outside consultants have only a limited impact on improving machine efficiency, especially over the long term. In a Technical Audit, the role of the outside consultant is reduced to a minimum. With its high staff involvement, a technical audit better locates the true sources of inefficiency and ensures that efficiency improvements are long-lasting.


Technical Due Diligence as Part of Site Acquisition

Our 50 years in industry have provided us with a detailed understanding of a variety of mill processes, grades and operating structures across industry. This background allows us to efficiently and effectively evaluate potential industry acquisitions from a technical operating perspective. During due diligence we can evaluate operating capacity and efficiency, equipment condition and maintenance backlog, mill capital planning. We can also readily evaluate mill manufacturing costs against both industry standards as well as identifying potential opportunities for improvement to both cost structure and quality.
